I am in love..with cloth diapers and all things cloths...and this is how the love story begins.
I became acquianted with cloth diapers (I still prefer to call them cloth nappies, the non-American name for this wonderful product) in the late 90s while I was at Uni. I was one of those very intense environmental friendly students then. My Uni was (and still is) quite particular on environmental issues. At one point, our Uni boycotted all products by a large MNC from Switzerland because of certain alleged malpractice of the said company in the third world countries. I went with the flow, adopted vegetarianism (and stayed on as one until I was reconverted by my carnivourous boyfriend-now husband
, but I still can't take red meat), practiced recycling etc. Needless to say I was always trying to be updated about the most current environmental issues.
Anyway, I actually knew about cloth nappies (pardon my lapse into Aussie term for cloth diapers) after reading about how a few women suffered from TSS (toxic shock syndrome) after using Tampon. Those women were allergic to disposable menstrual pads. Thus, the alternative was for them to use reusable cloth pads. Cloth nappies were mentioned as well since disposable nappies are produced in the same way as disposable pads so babies with sensitive skins will suffer the same ailment as those disposable pad wearers. However, at that time I couldn't find any bricks and mortar shops selling cloth pads (even in organic shop) in Sydney. The women made their own cloth pads but did not mass produced them. I was mildly disappointed, to say the least.
Then I returned to Sabah and started almost a new life. After being away for 6 years, I was in for a reverse culture shock. It took me a few years actually to adapt back to life here
...so my environmental warrior soul sort of wilted
mostly because there was more 'interesting' issue at hand back then, like, upgrading my boyfriend into a fiance and then the major upgrade into a husband! Those were really life changing upgrades for me.
I was reminded again about cloth nappies when Chloe Beatriz came into our life in 2002. I used the traditional flat nappies from gauze on her most of the time, especially when we were at home. I searched for cloth nappies all over KK to no avail. I did not trust the net those days and I also found it troublesome and expensive to order cloth diapers from overseas. So, Chloe did not get to wear the modern cloth nappies. However, she was fully toilet trained before the age of 2 so I really hope she did not leave that much bad prints on the environmental canvas.
Another blessing called Eden Gabrielle entered our life in March 2008. Her name is prophetic in a sense that she was named after the Garden of Eden where everything, including the ecosystem was in perfect balance! Her middle name is also prophetic as it is the name of an archangel (in the feminine form though). She is the inspiration for the name Baby My Luv. [Chloe too, but she insists she is no longer a baby but a pre schooler. She also commented 'Mummy, you spell love L-O-V-E not L-U-V!' Well.. I have my reasons for choosing that spelling but that's another story.)
She was mostly on traditional flat nappies and prefolded from the day she was born until about 4 weeks old. I said that because she received two packs of disposable nappies supply from our family friends as gifts. I did use them on Eden and they took forever to finish. I have more experience as a mother now and more ready than ever this time around. I began to use pocket and fitted nappies on her by the time she was 6 weeks old. Cloth nappies became an addiction and before long Eden has a stash of more than 40 cloth nappies! It's a good thing I had the sense to buy mostly one size nappies for Eden otherwise I will have to buy again when she resizes. I also discovered two new companions for cloth nappies, the cloth wipes (alternative to disposable wet wipes) and the wet bags (no, they are not wet, they are actually for storing wet, soiled nappies until wash time!).
A conversation with a retailer of cloth nappies jolted my conscience and reminded myself of my social responsibility. I should share my knowledge on cloth diapering (especially on frugal diapering). Thus, my vision of my own cloth nappies e-shoppe slowly came to being. Throuhg this I can then share my passion on natural parenting to the public and contribute something to the society. That is why I am starting a Charity Project here.
I love cloth nappies or cloth diapers as most of my friends call them. I love it even more when a mother make the choice to switch to cloth or for the first time mother, decide to use cloth nappy.
